The Problem

An automotive remarketing company needed to transition from physical, in-person vehicle auctions to a completely digital marketplace. Their existing web prototype failed under load; when hundreds of dealers attempted to bid on a single vehicle simultaneously in the final seconds of an auction, the server crashed, resulting in missed bids, frustrated dealers, and lost revenue.

System Architecture

We completely rebuilt the platform focusing on high concurrency and guaranteed transactional integrity.

  • Dealer Portal: A lightning-fast Next.js frontend tailored for rapid interaction, utilizing Server-Side Rendering (SSR) for SEO-friendly vehicle listings and client-side WebSockets for the live auction room.
  • Auction Engine: A specialized Node.js microservice dedicated exclusively to managing the state of live auctions and broadcasting updates via Socket.io.
  • Transactional Database: PostgreSQL handling the financial records and final bid allocations, ensuring ACID compliance so that no two dealers could ever "win" the same bid simultaneously.

Technical Challenges Overcome

1. The "Sniper" Problem (Concurrency)

In the last 5 seconds of an auction, the system received intense bursts of traffic. We implemented Redis as an in-memory datastore to process and validate incoming bids in microseconds before persisting the final winning bid to the slower PostgreSQL database. This completely eliminated the race conditions.

2. Secure Dealer Onboarding

To prevent fraudulent bidding, the platform required rigorous KYC (Know Your Customer) checks. We integrated Stripe Identity to automate ID verification, reducing manual approval times from days to minutes while maintaining compliance.
